Brasilian artist Renata Lucas
for Matemática rápida (Quick mathematics), 2007
presented by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, director of dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel 2012
That work superimposed two discrepant images that occupied the same place in space. It was the result of an exercise in fast sums and subtractions, something I had been working with since the beginning of my Bienal projects. The result was a sidewalk superimposed on top of another, slightly displaced diagonally and extending along a full block. It was a passage with new pavements, flowerbeds, trees, and lampposts whose lamps were slightly off-color, more yellow than the original ones. The effect was of one sidewalk walking over another.
More than just installing an autonomous sculpture in a public place, this work “Quick Mathematics” wanted to be inserted in the very fabric of the city, seeking to understand its mechanisms of operation.
There was a fascination with doubling the number of urban elements and street-lights that made the block color brighter and warmer, it looked more yellow and more intense, but subtle at the same time.
In this occasion, the artist book Postpone the End, was co-edited with SilvanaEditoriale - Cinisello Balsamo, Milan.
